Tank to Tankless: Rinnai RXP199 with Built-In Recirculation

Wall-mounted Rinnai tankless water heater with PVC venting, copper supply lines and service valves beside a garage furnace

What was replaced?

An old Bradford White gas tank water heater in the garage, swapped for a wall-mounted Rinnai RXP199 tankless water heater with a hot water recirculation pump built in.

What does the built-in recirculation pump do?

In intelligent mode it learns the household's usage patterns and has hot water ready at the times it is usually needed, so there is no standing at the tap waiting for it to warm up.

What changes in the garage?

The tank comes off the platform. The tankless unit hangs on the wall with new PVC venting, copper supply lines and service valves underneath it for future maintenance.

For this customer we installed a Rinnai RXP199 with an integral hot water recirculation pump. Intelligent mode learns your usage patterns, delivering hot water when you need it, without waiting.

This job is an example of water heater installation (tank & tankless).

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

It usually comes down to age and what failed. A thermostat, heating element, thermocouple, anode rod or pressure relief valve is a repair on an otherwise sound tank. A leaking tank body is not repairable — once the steel has corroded through, replacement is the only option. Tank heaters are generally documented as lasting 8–12 years, so a failure at year 10 on a unit that has never been flushed usually points toward replacement rather than another repair.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Sonoma County?

Yes. Permit Sonoma issues permits for like-for-like water heater replacement in unincorporated areas, and California code items such as seismic strapping, a temperature and pressure relief drain line and an expansion tank are checked at inspection. In unincorporated Sonoma County the permit goes through Permit Sonoma, whose published schedule lists a $327 minimum trade permit fee plus small per-unit charges — $20.75 for a water heater and vent, $8.26 per water piping unit, $8.26 for a gas piping system serving one to four outlets. Incorporated cities such as Santa Rosa, Windsor and Healdsburg run their own building departments, and the Marin towns each run theirs. Those are agency fees, not our charges.
