Why does my garbage disposal hum but not turn?
A hum with no rotation almost always means the motor is energised but the impeller plate is jammed. There is usually a hex socket on the underside that lets the plate be freed, and most units also have a reset button that trips on overload. If it frees and runs normally afterwards, the unit is fine. If it hums again immediately or trips repeatedly, the motor or bearings are going.
Should I repair or replace a garbage disposal?
Replacement is usually the sensible answer for anything beyond a jam or a tripped reset. Leaking from the body shell, a motor that hums without turning after being freed, or repeated resets all point to a unit at the end of its life, and disposals are generally cheaper to replace than to rebuild. A leak at the sink flange rather than the body is a different matter and is often just a reseal.
What should never go down a garbage disposal?
Grease and cooking oil, which cool and coat the line downstream, plus fibrous material like celery and onion skins, starchy items such as pasta and rice that swell, coffee grounds, and bones. On a septic system the case for restraint is stronger still, because everything the disposal grinds ends up as solids in a tank you own and pay to pump.
