What is sewer repair & replacement and when do you need it?
Sewer repair and replacement is what Avanté Plumbing does when the pipe carrying waste from your building to the public main has failed rather than simply blocked — and this covers both the lateral and the sewer main line itself. The signs are hard to miss once you know them: sewage backing up into the lowest drains, several fixtures failing together, a persistent smell in the yard, unusually green grass tracking along the line, or a lateral needing cleared every few months. In older Sonoma and Marin neighbourhoods the cause is usually clay or cast iron that has cracked, sagged into a belly holding standing water, or been split open by tree roots. A camera inspection separates a spot repair from a full replacement, so we look before quoting. In most of our service area the owner owns that pipe to the main. CSLB #841938.

Sewer Repair & Replacement FAQs

Absolutely. We stand behind our work with a satisfaction guarantee and offer warranties on our repairs and replacements for your peace of mind.

Should a sewer line be repaired or fully replaced?
It depends on how much of the run has failed. A single crack, one offset joint or a localised root intrusion is a spot repair. Widespread root intrusion along the length, a pipe that has lost its shape, repeated failures in different places, or a belly that holds water are replacement conversations — patching one section of a line that is failing generally just moves the next failure a few feet. A camera inspection settles it.
How long does a sewer lateral last?
It depends heavily on material. Clay and cast iron laterals, common on pre-1970s houses across Sonoma and Marin, are typically at or past the end of their service life now and are the ones that show root intrusion at every joint. Modern ABS and PVC lines have a far longer expected life. Several Marin districts use age as a trigger in their own ordinances — Sonoma Valley's lets the district call in any lateral 30 years or older.
Do I need a permit to replace a sewer lateral?
For work connecting to the public sewer, yes. Permit Sonoma lists building sewers, side sewers, laterals, mains and manholes under its sanitation sewer construction permit, and its schedule shows a $257 plan check for a sewer line from the main to a building. In Marin the serving sanitary district administers it, and several also require a compliance certificate afterwards.
